I have served at Liberty Elementary organizing their book room. At Huff Hills I cleaned up trees. I went to St. Gabriel's and cleaned chairs as well as vacuumed. At Heart River Lutheran Church I worked on deep cleaning the church.
Project Armchair (Spring 2017)
I worked with a group to raise money and books for Project Armchair. This organization is composed of teachers who volunteer to read to children in the pediatrics unit. After reading the book to the child, the book stays with him or her. Our group also coordinated a book fair at Barnes and Noble where we received book donations as well as raised money to donate to the organization. At the end of our project we were able to donate numerous books as well as a monetary donation so they can purchase more books. During this project, I helped plan with Barnes and Noble for the book fair, put posters up, and worked the book fair.
No Excuses University (Spring 2017)
This past year I worked with a group for the No Excuses University Program. We were all paired with a pen pal from an elementary school in Montana. We communicated with them over the year through GoogleDocs. Our group was able to send them a package of University of Mary water bottles. We also set up a Skype meeting with the class.
Optimist Backpack Program (Spring 2017)
I was part of a group that worked to raise money to buy supplies to fill backpacks for the Optimist Backpack program. The Optimist Club gives the backpacks to shelters in Bismarck for families in transitional housing. We were able to fill numerous backpacks with toys, school supplies, and hygiene products. My role in this project was to help shop for items to put in the backpacks as well as contact a local dentist to ask for donations.
Ultimately, we are called to serve one another. We all have different gifts/abilities/skills and we can share those with each other. I want to instill the value of service in my students. I think it is important to teach students to think about the needs of others and how they can help on whatever level possible.
